
Keeping Your Bathroom Heaters Safe (And Your Towels Warm)
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got steam everywhere, splashes of water, and electrical currents all hanging out in the same small space. It’s a recipe for trouble. That’s why we don’t mess around with the glass in our infrared towel rails. We use explosion-proof quartz. Why the fancy glass? Think about this: you’ve got a heating element screaming hot, and suddenly, a single cold drop of water hits it. With cheap glass, that’s a one-way ticket to a shattered tube. Our quartz is tempered and high-purity, meaning it can handle those wild temperature swings without freaking out. When we say “explosion-proof,” we just mean the tube is tough enough to hold its own and not pop when things get intense. How the heat actually works These heaters use short-wave infrared. Instead of trying to warm up all the air in the room—which takes forever—the heat goes straight into the fibers of your towel. It’s a much more direct kind of warmth. Inside the tube, we use a halogen fill. This is a neat little trick that keeps the tungsten filament from burning out too fast by recycling the evaporated metal back onto the wire. It basically gives the bulb a much longer life. But a quick heads-up: your wiring needs to be up to the task. These tubes pack a lot of heat into a small space. If your housing doesn’t have a way to breathe, the heat builds up around the reflector and you’ll lose some of that efficiency. Where things usually go wrong We made these easy to swap out with standard connectors, but there’s a catch. Steam loves to eat away at metal. Most of the time, when a heater fails, it’s because the contact points have oxidized. To stop that from happening, we stick with gold-plated or nickel-plated terminals. They just don’t corrode like the cheap stuff. One last thing to keep in mind: the quartz tube is incredibly strong, but the seals at the ends? Those are the weak spots. If a seal lets go, moisture gets in, hits the filament, and pop—there goes your lamp. So, when you’re shopping or installing, don’t just look at the tube. Check the IP rating of the whole fixture. That’s what actually keeps the water out.
