Getting Your Bathroom Heat Just Right
When you’re picking out infrared heaters for the bathroom, your first instinct might be to go for the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really about finding the sweet spot for the size of your room so you aren’t wasting electricity or, worse, shivering in a room that’s barely lukewarm. Picking the right power If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 250W to 400W lamp is plenty. In a space that small, a high-wattage heater will turn the room into a sauna in seconds. That’s a problem because your thermostat will be clicking on and off constantly, which just wears out the lamp faster. For those mid-sized bathrooms—somewhere between 4m² and 8m²—you’re usually looking at 600W to 800W. Now, if you have a massive master bath or those fancy high ceilings, you’ll probably need 1000W or more. Keep in mind that infrared heat moves in a straight line. It’s like a flashlight beam of warmth. If you mount the lamp way up high, you lose some of that punch before it hits you, so you’ll need a bit more wattage to make up for the distance. Dealing with the steam Bathrooms are pretty brutal on electronics. Between the steam and the occasional splash, those quartz tubes can actually crack if they hit a sudden temperature shift. That’s why we use sealed, IP-rated housings. It keeps the guts of the heater safe. Just a tip: make sure your gaskets are seated perfectly. If they’re loose, moisture will sneak into the socket and fry your wiring. Not a fun way to start your morning. The balancing act Sure, higher wattage means you get warm faster. But there’s a catch. Your circuit breaker can only handle so much. If you hook up four 1000W lamps to one residential circuit, you’re probably going to trip the breaker and end up in the dark. A better way to do it? Use a few lower-wattage lamps spread across the ceiling. You get a nice, even glow of heat everywhere instead of one scorching “hot spot” and a few freezing corners. It just feels more natural.
