
The Real Secret to IP44 Infrared Heaters: It’s All in the Wires
If you’re putting together an infrared heater for a place that’s wet or dusty, you’ve probably looked at the IP44 rating. But here’s the thing: the rating is only half the story. The chassis usually holds up fine. The real nightmare? The lead-in wire. In these high-wattage systems, the spot where the electrical wire meets the heating element gets incredibly hot. If that seal isn’t perfect, moisture creeps in. Or worse, the copper starts to oxidize. And once that starts, you’re on a fast track to a breakdown.
Why the cheap stuff fails
Most heaters you’ll find use basic silicone or just some glue-gun sealant. It looks fine at first. But these materials can’t handle the constant “on-off” heat cycle. Eventually, the adhesive dries out. It cracks. Once there’s a gap, oxygen and humidity rush straight to the connection. The insulation gets brittle, snaps, and—boom—you’ve got a dead short. We do things differently. We use high-temp fluorosilicone or special ceramic potting. The trick is that these materials expand and contract at the same rate as the quartz tube. Instead of fighting the heat, the seal just moves with it.
The balancing act
Now, you might think, “Why not just pack it full of sealant to make it totally waterproof?” Actually, that’s a trap. If you over-do the potting, you trap too much heat right at the wire. That actually cooks the insulation from the inside out. It’s a delicate balance. We spend a lot of time figuring out the exact amount of sealant needed and use silver-plated copper leads to keep the resistance low. It keeps things cool and dry at the same time.
What to look for when buying
Next time you’re spec-ing out a heating table, take a close look at where the wire enters the housing. If you see a simple rubber grommet, walk away. That’s not an industrial seal; it’s a placeholder. You want a fused transition. That’s what stops the dreaded “burn out” you see in cheap units. Just make sure your wiring gauge is beefy enough to handle the current, otherwise, you’re just adding more heat to the seal and defeating the whole purpose.
